Philosophy of Communication

Every man himself is communication. Every word, every gesture, every action or non-action contains and sends messages. The depth of our ethical identity expresses itself by communication. Communication occurs in the reciprocal connection with oneself and the world around us. In order to successfully tune in to your communication partner, it is essential to have an empathetic, goal oriented communication which presupposes an integral value system (e.g. personal values, enterprise policy). The way we communicate is decisive for success in our daily private lives, as well as in a context of a social and economic suprastructure.

Successful communication always presupposes the mutual willingness of „sharing“ (win-win) and is devoid of manipulation and aggressive behavior. Communication depends on the fundamental dilemma of human behavior. In other words between the ideal and reality there are always a traces of imperfection as well as personal limits and differences in cultural as values.

Individual prior experiences and cultural conditioning create and determine a unique model of the world in every human being. Every person creates his or her own picture of the world – a kind of personal map of the world.

Consequently, misunderstandings in communication arise due to the fact that our counterpart has a different picture of the world.

In order to communicate successfully, we have to understand his or her picture of the world. This is achieved by an open and neutral attitude.

When problems in communication arise, it is important not only to consider the visible part of the other person but also such invisible parts as needs, emotions or experiences. These unconscious drives remain invisible for us. They can only be discerned or felt in their totality by empathy.

Conflicts and misunderstandings can not be avoided and arise in private as well as in professional and working settings. The purpose of conflict management is to avoid the escalation of difficult discussions or negotiations.

Conflict management contributes to finding compromises. When exercising critique it is decisive how we express ourselves. An impartial and relaxed atmosphere are a central preconditions for the deescalation of conflicts.

Active listening for example is the precondition for the success of an argumentative discussion. Questions and appropriate body language are helpful in tuning in to your counterpart as well as by sending appeasing signals which direct the discussion in the desired direction. Diplomatic tactfulness and mutual agreements for future behavior show respect for the feelings of your counterpart and creates empathy.

It is important to show your counterpart respect and understanding and give an impartial explanation how a conflicting situation arises.

But communicate factually. Niveau and style always belong to a positive deportment. They show respect and make an agreement possible.

Conclusion:

If communication is subjected to rigid rules and regulations, the freedom of personal development would be diminished. Communication is a holistic process, which is supported by models for illustration, as an orienting framework for human behavior. This process makes clear that all phases of life, the relationship between the environment, the immediate surroundings, metaphysical and spiritual world and the psychological and emotional world of person, etc. are dependent on each other and shape the togetherness. Communication is based on esteem and consideration and respect for the other. Communication is also a life-long process which requires personality development, openness, patience and perseverance.
